As it says above I was wondering what got everybody started in role playing. Also What do you think is the definitive RP game.
Suppose I better get this started.
It all started with a brilliant PC game, "Eye of the Beholder 3". It all started with that. I got it as a birthday present and still have it 16 years later. And yes I do still play it.
It however would not be my definitive RP game. That honor is given to the first RP game I played on the PC. Ultima 6. True freedom to do what you like.
I guess you are wondering why I would not pick a pencil and paper RP game if I like freedom. well I guess it is due to I was part of a group that always argued and no one ever looked out for anyone but themselves which ended up in, a lot of the time, not being able to do anything. at least in electronic games the only arguing is with yourself. (not a problem unless your character replays and you have an argument with them too)

Hello btkgf, This is a GREAT topic so I stickied it for you so it doesn't get eaten by forum pruning. But anyhow, I got started with just plain old interactive story telling. When I was a child, my mother would tell me a story at night time. She would get to critical parts in the story and ask me "what would you do?". This was meant to develop thinking and problem solving skills, but it was fun! Later on in life I found my first adventure book, where you got to pick how you wanted the story to progress. And of course video games re-enforced my love of RPGs. Personally, I think the ultimate game of yester years was Chrono trigger, in the old NES format. That game was absolutely epic. After all of that, it wasn't until my college years that I got a taste of good old fashioned paper and pencil RPGs....Oh I can hear that 20 sided dice rolling now lol. Thanks for the trip down memory lane! Cheers

I must say this is a nostalgic topic. I can't help but throw in my two cents.
For me, the first RPG exposure that I received was playing classic video games as a child; the Zelda series, etc. But it wasn't until I had discovered the magical world of Dungeons & Dragons, that the genre ignited a spark in me which is yet to fail. My best friend (whom I will refer to as Stalker, due to the fact that he enjoys the alias of "He Who Stalks the Night," [an action of which he does partake]) was the first to turn me on to the imagination-driven universe. His family were all involved in pencil/paper role-playing of some sort, and so it was only natural that he would follow in their footsteps, and include me in that as well.
Back then we were children, and as children do, we played from time to time- whenever it dawned on us to do so. But now that we have done some growing up, yet still having a lot to do, we have worked out one day out of each week that we set aside to meet and play our never-ending campaign; A wizard, a ranger, a barbarian, and a monk, all more than ready to defeat any foe that we might tackle.
The RPG has played a major part in my life, and so I naturally gravitate to games along that type. And now, I am here making my own amateur games. Incidentally, I do hope to be done with one of my games within a foreseeable amount of time. Granted, at the most, it's only about one-tenth done
But anyway, thanks for the trip down memory lane, BTKGF.

grrrr gowle grr grrr *nods head* My friend owns a shirt with this dragon's signature on it... however, that only raises many questions in my mind. Maybe I should start fearing my friend's summoning powers, as well.

May I ask how long your campaign has been going on?
I think the longest we had a campaign go for was a year?
Mainly because of arguments did campaigns get cut short.

My god, how long has it been...? *thinks for a bit* We started playing it quite a long time ago, but then we broke it up to do other, smaller campaigns. It was only within the last year that we started it up again, though, with a new member to our party. So, I would have to say that, excluding the extended break period, we've been playing this one campaign for neigh on three years.
It's a lot of fun, and we have a very good- yet sometimes reluctant- DM.

3 years!!! WOW!!!
I think our group lasted 3 years before the squabbling got too much even for me.
Our DM was great it was just we never agreed on anything in the group and with expecting everyone to die or run off wizards became attacking characters rather than having any support spells learned. What good is bulls strength if there is no fighter there to cast it on?

That's so true! But then again, I'm not a huge fan of the support spell; I like to leave that to bards and other divine magic users.

We had 1 bard in all the D&D campaigns we played.
Dont trust Clerics they are evil or self ritious

I can't stand them myself... it always seemed to me that whoever played the cleric in my campaigns either didn't really get into the game itself at all, or was a real jerk about who they passed around their healing to.

So the latter was playing the perfect cleric.
Our clerics never survived. Last one picked a fight with a paladin about 5 levels higher than him.
My characters have always been labeled evil, even though they are TN and just in it for themselves, but it was one of our paladins that had to make a ravenloft power check. Not only that but he made 3 in the same adventure. Of course there was slaggings over as "Well none of my characters had to make a power check"

I love Ravenloft. I did a short campaign in that universe before, and it was one of my favorites... but the whole time I couldn't stop thinking: "Hey... you got D&D in my goth..." "You got goth in my D&D!"

The only thing about Ravenloft is that the first person you are introduced to formally is invariably the lord of the domain.
